“Where is the support for renters?” - Our 2021 budget response.
In response to the budget today, Chief Executive Steve Hughes asks where the support for people who have fallen behind on their rent is.
Steve said:
“We are in unprecedented times, and despite the positive roadmap that puts the worst of COVID-19 behind us, individuals across Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford still face massive uncertainties.
“Hundreds of people in our area face the real worry of eviction at the end of March when the evictions ban ends with no support measures announced in the budget today.
“Citizens Advice recently found that half a million private renters are currently behind on their rent. Today was an excellent opportunity for the Chancellor to provide support in these difficult times.
“Financial support for renters is urgently needed to avoid a homelessness and rent debt crisis.”
Commenting on the new the Universal Credit uplift has been extended for six months, Steve said:
“Over 100,000 people across Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford now face a cliff-edge in the autumn.
“Universal credit claimants will lose £20 a week, just as unemployment is expected to peak. The announcement that furlough will be extended until September is welcome, but the Universal Credit lifeline will help keep families afloat and help the economy recover.
“A six-month extension is welcome but is not good enough. The Government must reconsider and keep the uplift for at least a year.”
